Evelyn Cruse

May 1, 1928 ~ October 10, 2020 (age 92)


Evelyn Cruse, 92 of Asbury Park, NJ passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2020 in her home. She was born on May 1,1928 in Horatio, SC to the late Willie and Mary Sanders Robinson.

She received her elementary education in South Carolina.  Evelyn moved to Asbury Park at the age of 17 and attended Asbury Park High School. In 1948 she married Isaiah McMillan, and after his untimely death, she married the late James Cruse.

Evelyn joined Allen Chapel AME Church in 1945 at the age of 17. She was a good and faithful member of the church for 75 years.  She had served on many boards and in many capacities.  She was a former Sunday School Teacher, member of the Pastor’s Aid, the Building Fund Committee, President of the Senior Usher Board, President of the Willing Workers, Treasurer of the First Aid Unit , member of the Lay Organization, Alice Moore Missionary Society, Trustee Board, and Steward Board. She was also a member of the Seacost Usher’s Union. Evelyn was widely known for her wonderful homemade cakes and her beautiful insightful poems. Her favorite pass time was Bingo and the Love of "FAMILY".

She worked in the garment district and was a member of the National Ladies Garment Workers Union. Evelyn also worked as a supervisor in the sewing department of Atlantic Mills in Asbury Park, where she retired in 1993.

She was predeceased by her late husbands, Isaiah McMillan and James Cruse; special friend, Madison G.Terrell; five brothers, Rosevelt, Edward, Willie, Powell, and Taft Robinson; four sisters, Martha Brooks, Willemina Hollimon, Mary Williams, and Elise Keys; and beloved stepson, James McCullon.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Weedon; son, Derrick Terrell (Valerie) of Asbury Park, NJ; two grandsons, David Weedon (Stacy), and Kyle Weedon (Tracy); granddaughters, Kelly (Special), Talya, Taleeya, and Shaquanna Bennett; five great-granddaughters, Adarra Davis, Bre’Asia and Imani Wright, Jada, and Juna Weedon; one great-grandson, Kyle Weedon Jr.; special niece, Lillian Williams; and host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Evelyn’s favorite passage of scripture was Psalm 25, and her life’s motto was: “If I can help somebody as I pass along; then my living will not be in vain”.
